FAQ's
How does registration work?
Whether you attend as a new NHS or private patient, we require you to complete confidential medical history and social history forms. You can see these forms here.
The NHS also require you to complete a form at the practice which will contain details of any benefits you receive (please bring proof).
As a private patient, we currently charge a new patient consultation fee of £49.50. However, if you decide to join one of our membership plans, we will refund this fee*.
*(This offer is applicable from 01 February 2012, and may be withdrawn at any time).
We then need to examine your mouth, and will provide you with a written treatment plan, if you require any treatment.
What's the difference between NHS and private, and which should I choose?
For NHS patients, we strive to provide the best care we can within the constraints of NHS funding. We have a pool of NHS dentists, and you will be allocated the first available. We cannot guarantee you will always see the same dentist, however we hope you are satisfied with the care you receive.
Private patients will be seen by either Mr. Azfar or Mr. Shore who are the practice owners. The appointments are generally longer, and we are free to discuss and recommend the best care for you. There is a greater choice of materials and access to excellent dental technicians who manufacture dental appliances such as crowns, dentures etc.. If you join our membership plan, the cost of registration and check ups is spread out over a year and you will also enjoy a 20% discount on our private fees.
In terms of choosing between NHS and private, you should consider factors such as:
Continuity of care - do you want a long term dentist, or is it likely you will need to move away in the near term? Staying with someone you know and get to trust is an important consideration in healthcare.
Overall cost - NHS care is of course subsidised, and so is cheaper. However, the costs of private care at A&S are not prohibitive compared to everyday costs such as car servicing, boiler insurance/repair and even energy costs these days! Its a matter of prioritising essentials, and we recognise that in todays economic climate private dental care could easily be considered a luxury - however, we believe that you should not compromise on any aspect of your healthcare, your teeth and gums are important too!
If I go private, what about my children?
We only offer NHS care for children at A&S, other than treatments such as sports gumshields which are specifically excluded by the NHS. However, children of private patients aged up to 18, and those over 18 in any full time education, will be seen by Mr. Azfar or Mr. Shore and have access to our private standards of service. This means they will be seen every six months in line with NHS guidelines on fluoride varnish applications, even if Mum or Dad are on a twelve month membership plan.
Mr. Azfar and Mr. Shore remain committed to the principles of the NHS by Providing NHS Dentistry through our NHS Dentists here at A&S Dental Surgeons Ltd.
